What You Need to Know if You Have Been Charged With Theft or Robbery

theft robbery springfeildThe Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office has the ability to charge an individual with either theft or robbery. First we’ll discuss theft. Theft can be a misdemeanor or felony offense and that is based upon the amount of money or value of goods that were allegedly taken. The cut off is $500. If an individual commits a theft of under $500, it would be a misdemeanor over $500 is a felony offense. They’re separate felonies based upon the amounts that go over that. If you are accused of committing a theft, you should seek an attorney immediately, especially a qualified criminal defense attorney.

You want an attorney who’s main focus is criminal offense and not patent law or personal injury work. You want to make sure that they have experience in defending individuals with the types of charges that you have. Theft charges are fairly common and they can have any wide variety of outcomes based on the evidence. An individual can be eligible for probation, task probation, drug court. They could be supervision eligible if it’s a misdemeanor, but every case is fact specific. Robbery is a different charge and it is treated a little bit more severely based on the threat of force.

Robbery charges are all felony offenses. Again they are prosecuted by the State’s Attorney’s Office at the county in which the crime has allegedly occurred. If an individual is charged with a robbery, they definitely need representation. They definitely need aggressive representation and we would be happy to represent anybody charged with a robbery, whether it’s arm robbery, bank robbery, aggravated robbery. Any of those types of charges, they all have different sentence structures and they all require a thorough investigation and resources dedicated to look in out of the defendant’s best interest.
