How does LIDAR effect my Illinois Speeding Ticket?
By Dan Noll on December 20th, 2013 in
If you have received a speeding ticket, it is possible the officer used a LiDAR speed detection device. LiDAR speed detection devices are commonly used by the Illinois State Police while they are patrolling Interstate 55. Our Traffic Defense Lawyer, Daniel Noll, was a traffic prosecutor at the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office when LiDAR technology was becoming popular in law enforcement. He was able to go to the Glenarm exit on I-55 with the Illinois State Police to see firsthand how LiDAR works.
Unlike radar, LiDar can target specific vehicles. The machine itself has a sighting scope on it similar to a sniper rifle. A skilled police officer can target and clock between 8-10 vehicles in a 5 second period. Often times, the Illinois State Police will have a trooper on an overpass targeting vehicles with a chase car to initiate traffic stops.
If you have been cited for speeding and the officer used a LiDAR machine, it does not mean that all hope is lost.
